Fly on the Wall and the Bubbly Bunch

A Rhyming Story About the Yellow Zone

I’m just a small fly on a classroom wall,But wow — today’s feelings were bouncing off all!The energy grew like a soda gone shook,And I knew what I saw with just one little look...

The Yellow Zone — not angry, not mad,Not weepy or sleepy, not sulky or sad. It’s the wiggles and giggles, the shout-outs and spin,The bubbling feelings that burst from within.

The Buildup:

It started with Jordan — just tapping his shoe,Then drumming his desk like a rockstar would do.He smiled real wide, his brain moving fast,Ideas and jokes flying way past the task.

Then Kenzie was humming and twirling her braid,She whispered to friends while directions were laid. Her eyes were all sparkles, she couldn't sit still,But her work sat untouched, right there on the sill.

I watched from the wall as the fizz started rising,The bouncing and blurting were not that surprising.Because here’s what I know — and you’ll know it too:When Yellow creeps in… it gives you a cue.

Teaching Moment: Use the Yellow as a Signal

It’s the moment to pause — not throw pencils or shout,It’s your body’s way of saying, “Let’s figure this out.”You're not in trouble, but here's what is true:What you do next is all up to YOU.

Stop.Ask yourself:❓ What do I need?❓ Is my brain racing ahead of my speed?❓ Do I need to stretch? Or squeeze a ball?❓ Do I need a break from the noise and go in the hall?

Use your strategies — like a brain-powered hack!A fidget, a drawing, a calm corner snack. Some kids do breathing or stretch like a cat,Some ask for a walk — there's no shame in that.

When Yellow is Expected:

Now sometimes, the Yellow is perfectly right —Like running at recess or playing with might.Birthday parties. Gym class. A loud music game. That’s Yellow with purpose, and it’s not the same.

When Yellow’s Unexpected:

But when it’s the time for your brain to be on —Like math or directions or reading aloud —And you’re spinning or shouting or jumping around…Then Yellow’s unexpected — too big, too loud.

Wrap-Up: Power in the Pause

You don’t have to be perfect or still as a tree.Just notice your Yellow and say, “That’s me!”Then use your tools before things explode,And you’ll stay in control of your own little road.

I’m just a fly — I buzz and I zip,

But I’ve seen when kids start to lose their grip.

And I’ve seen them pause, choose, and turn it around,

Now that’s the real power I’ve proudly found.
